We were proud sponsors of the Aug. 26th BOLD workshop on Clarifying Employee Engagement held at Genentech's South San Francisco campus. The speakers - from Cisco, Intuit, Best Places to Work Institute, and others - were quite informative. Of particular value was candid sharing of their ups and downs of launching an employee-engagement initiative.
For some time, there's been much talk regarding accountability, ownership, or commitment in the workplace. But what does this really mean? How do companies cultivate a culture of accountability? How do leaders inspire ownership? And what is the role of HR/OD professionals in this initiative? These were just some of the talking points.
According to a Towers Perrin 2007-2008 Global Workforce Study, only one of every five workers today is giving full discretionary effort on the job, and this "engagement gap" poses serious risks for employers because of the strong connection between employee engagement and company financial performance.
This was a thoughtful and well-organized event by Mary Ann Ireland of BOLD - a member-based network of OD professionals dedicated to growing people who manage talent and develop their organizations into productive life science companies.
