Last week's OD Conference 2009 in Seattle was my first and I made sure to sit in on Peter Block's keynote, as well as Leng Lim's. Considered by some to be the godfather of OD, I found Block's talk radical yet thought provoking - "stop waiting for leaders, begin the discussion!," abstract yet moving - "shift the conversation from problem solving to possibility creating." He spoke about community and the structure of belonging, the subject of his new book, and although seemingly more applicable in civic and non-profit settings, I sense his book will be used in organizations of all types.

Leng Lim was born in Asia, educated in North America, and founded the South East Asian Leadership Network. His discussion on culture, compassion, and the promise of inter-cultural contact is both timely and useful for American businesses and organizations.

Linda Sharkey, Ph.D, Distinguished Fellow, Marshall Goldsmith School of Business Global Leadership Development Center, presented on behalf of our company, Human Synergistics International, showcasing some of the few tools at the conference that actually measures leadership impact and organizational culture effectiveness and improvements.

Putting the art of leadership into practice

You will enjoy this thoughtful and timely blog post by communication expert, John Baldoni at HBR, where he discusses the difference between the art of leadership and the practice of leadership. Learning the difference between the two, says Baldoni, is a good way to get a handle on what's expected of leaders.

Check out the article and let me know what you think:  http://blogs.harvardbusiness.org/baldoni/2009/09/putting_the_art_of_leadership.html

Thank you!
